1.7 Million Dozen Eggs Recalled
Egg Recall Due to Salmonella Risk
Over 2 million eggs are being recalled after causing 79 illnesses and 21 hospitalisations. The FDA announced that 1.7 million “brown, cage-free, certified organic eggs” from California’s August Egg Company may carry Salmonella, a bacterium that “kills over 420 Americans annually.”
Where and How to Identify the Eggs
The contaminated eggs were sold in seven states between February 29 and May 17. They include brands like Raleys, Simple Truth, and Sun Harvest. The eggs have a Julian Date between 32 and 126, located “on the short side of the carton.” Consumers should “throw out or return” these eggs for a refund.
Health Risks and Safety Advice
Salmonella can cause symptoms such as “diarrhoea, cramping or pain in the stomach, nausea, and vomiting.” The bacteria “cannot withstand temperatures above 140F (60C),” so frying or boiling eggs thoroughly kills it. However, cooking eggs sunnyside up is risky as “the top of the egg” may not get hot enough.
