Michigan Church Attack

At least five people, including the gunman, were killed and more than eight injured after a mass shooting at the

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.

How It Happened

Police said 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former Marine,

“drove a vehicle through the front doors of the church, exited and started firing shots.”

He then poured gasoline and set the building on fire, causing its roof to collapse.

Casualties and Response

Chief William Renye confirmed “two more bodies had been recovered inside the building,

in addition to the two other victims who had died of gunshot wounds.”

Ten others were hospitalized, one later dying. Police killed Sanford in a shootout.

Background

Sanford served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008 and was a husband and father.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive as the community mourns.
