Trump Signs New Election Order
President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections
, requiring voters to show proof of U.S.
citizenship when registering for federal elections. Critics warn the move could disenfranchise millions.
New Voter ID Rules
Acceptable documents include a U.S. passport, REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, military ID,
or other federal-standard photo IDs.
States must also share voter registration data with federal agencies to remove noncitizens from voter rolls.
Mail-In Ballot Changes
The order requires all mail-in ballots to be received by Election Day,
ending the practice in 18 states and Puerto Rico of counting ballots postmarked by Election Day but received later.
Backlash and Legal Challenges
Supporters say the order will ensure “free, fair, and honest” elections. Opponents call it unconstitutional and voter suppression.
Legal experts expect lawsuits challenging Trump’s authority to override existing federal election law.
