AstraZeneca Announces $4.5 Billion Investment in Virginia
Pharma giant AstraZeneca will invest $4.5 billion to build two new facilities in Albemarle County, Virginia,
creating over 600 permanent jobs and 3,000 construction roles.
The October 9 announcement marks one of the largest pharmaceutical construction projects in U.S. history.

The sites will produce next-generation therapies for chronic diseases and cancer treatments,
forming part of AstraZenecaâs $50 billion U.S. expansion plan through 2030.

Governor Glenn Youngkin called it a âtransformational project that cements Virginia as a global hub for advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing.â
The investment supports a wider U.S. reshoring trend as companies strengthen domestic supply chains.

AstraZeneca said the project will âreduce reliance on overseas facilities and ensure faster delivery of medicines to American patients.â
Though experts warn of regulatory and workforce challenges,
the Virginia Economic Development Partnership projects a $7 billion long-term boost to the stateâs economy â a strong sign that U.S. manufacturing is thriving again.
