Jeffries and Leavitt Trade Barbs
Jeffries and Leavitt Clash as Shutdown Deepens
As the federal government shutdown drags into its second week, tensions erupted between
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt,
turning political debate into personal attacks.
Jeffries accused Leavitt of spreading lies, saying,
“She’s out of control… I’m not sure whether she’s just demented,
ignorant, a stone-cold liar, or all of the above.”
His comments followed Leavitt’s claim that Democrats were
“a coalition of terrorists, violent criminals, and undocumented immigrants.”
Leavitt fired back on X, insisting “everything I said was true” and accusing Democrats of “coddling violent criminals”
and “opening the borders.” Jeffries countered that the
administration was using “hate and fear” to distract from its failures.
Analysts say the feud reflects a “breakdown of civility” in Washington.
where personal insults have replaced policy debate — a bitter sign of America’s deep political divide amid a prolonged government shutdown.
