Top Democrat Faces Legal Firestorm Over Leaked Maxwell Emails
Raskin Faces Backlash
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) is under fire for publishing private emails
from convicted trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.
Attorney Leah Saffian called it “a gross abuse of power,”
noting that employees at Federal Prison Camp Bryan were fired for leaking the messages.
Concerns Over Legal Violations
Saffian said the leak and publication violated Maxwell’s constitutional rights,
including the First, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments.
She added, “The system failed her once.
Now a sitting member of Congress has compounded that failure.”
Email Content
The emails portrayed Maxwell’s relatively positive experience at Bryan:
“The food is legions better, the place is clean, the staff responsive and polite…
I am much, much happier here and more importantly, safe.”
She also mocked her prior Florida prison, writing,
“The kitchen looks clean too — no possums falling from the ceiling.”
Political and Legal Fallout
Raskin implied Maxwell might seek clemency, which Saffian denied:
“Ms. Maxwell has not requested a commutation or made a pardon application.”
