Texas DA Reveals Whether Teen Charged in Fatal Stabbing of 17-Year-Old Star…

Tragic Stabbing at Texas High School Track Meet
On April 2, 2025, 17-year-old Austin Metcalf died after being stabbed during a district track meet at Frisco High School’s Kuykendall Stadium. The suspect, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School, was arrested and charged with murder.

Details of the Incident
Police say the fight began when Karmelo sought shelter under another school’s tent during a rainstorm. When asked to move, a verbal argument broke out with Austin, who then grabbed Karmelo. Karmelo “pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Austin in the chest.” Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Austin died at the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Charges
Karmelo admitted to the stabbing but claims it was “self-defense after a verbal argument turned physical.” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis explained that because Karmelo was 17 at the time, he “cannot be sentenced to death or life without parole” due to a 2005 Supreme Court ruling. If convicted, Karmelo faces “a sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years in prison.” A bond hearing is scheduled, and the court will decide if the trial remains in Collin County.
