60+ De.ad As Inferno Tears Through Newly Opened
Deadly Fire Devastates New Iraqi Mall
At least 61 people died in a massive fire that tore through the Corniche Hypermarket Mall in Kut, just five days after it opened. The blaze began late Wednesday night, reportedly after an air conditioner exploded. Flames rapidly engulfed the six-story structure, trapping shoppers inside.
A survivor said, “An air conditioner exploded on the second floor and then the fire erupted – and we couldn’t escape.” Horrifying videos showed people on the rooftop as the fire spread. Firefighters rescued more than 45 people, but many others were not so lucky. Ambulances transported victims until 4 a.m., with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
Tragic Losses and Search for Missing
Victims included men, women, and children. According to a medical source, there are “many unidentifiable remains.” The interior ministry confirmed: “The tragic fire claimed the lives of 61 innocent citizens, most of whom suffocated in bathrooms, and among them 14 charred bodies yet to be identified.”
Family members gathered outside hospitals in grief. One man cried, “Oh my father, oh my heart,” while another, Nasir al-Quraishi, said, “A disaster has befallen us… We went to the mall to have some food… and escape power cuts at home.”
Government Response and Investigation
Governor Miyahi announced three days of mourning and legal action against the mall’s owner and contractor. He stated, “The tragedy is a major shock… and requires a serious review of all safety measures.” Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered a full investigation.
