Three beachgoers dead after sea mines wash up
Three people—two men and a woman—were killed when sea mines drifted close to Zatoka Beach near Odesa, Ukraine. They were swimming in prohibited waters about 165 feet from shore.
Regional governor Oleh Kiper said all three were killed instantly and warned that entering unchecked waters is “fatally dangerous.”
Many beaches remain closed due to risks from sea mines, unexploded bombs, and mortars. Both Russia and Ukraine have deployed mines in the Black Sea since 2022, and currents can carry them to shore.
Police reported “two separate explosions of unknown objects” caused the deaths.
The Black Sea, once a popular holiday spot, is now highly dangerous. Officials remind people that even beaches “declared safe on land may still be dangerous in the water.” This tragedy shows the ongoing risks from the war, even away from battle zones.
