Texas Teen Dies After Football Practice
A Texas high school student, 15-year-old Preston Malone, died after a medical emergency during football practice, officials confirmed.
Emergency During Practice
On August 18, Malone felt unwell and told a coach he wasn’t feeling right.
“The coach immediately noticed that Malone was not sweating,” a district spokesperson said.
Staff placed him in a cold tub and called 911. He was taken to a hospital but died on August 20.
Community Response
Superintendent A. Katrise Perera shared his final words: “Hey, I’m sorry I was unable to finish the workout,” adding, “which speaks to the type of kid Preston was.”
Tributes and Safety Measurer
Lancaster ISD said staff “carefully followed all UIL and district heat safety protocols.”
Former coaches remembered Malone’s determination.
“He wasn’t the biggest kid, so he always had to fight,” one said.
