Eight years ago, Tanzania was shaken by the Karatu school bus crash that killed 32 children, two teachers, and the driver.

On May 6, 2017, the Lucky Vincent Primary School students were on their way to a mock national exam when

“the school bus lost control on a rain-slicked road” and plunged into a ravine.

News of the tragedy spread quickly. Media outlets suspended programming,

and President John Magufuli declared national mourning.

Vigils and prayers were held nationwide as families and communities grieved.

Stories of Survival

Amid the devastation, three students—Wilson, Sadia, and Doreen—were found alive.

Their survival, described as “miraculous,” inspired people worldwide and offered hope in the midst of loss.

Lasting Impact

The tragedy sparked calls for safer school transport and stricter driver standards.

Today, flowers at the Karatu memorial honor the children remembered as “dreamers, students, and beloved sons and daughters.”
