Capsizing and Falls Overboard

Drowning: The Leading Danger

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that “85 percent of people who drown while boating are not wearing a lifejacket.”

Most deaths in small boats happen after a fall overboard or a capsizing.

The most important step? “Always wear your lifejacket.”

Why Boats Capize or People Fall Overboard

Capsizing often occurs in small boats like canoes.

Causes include sharp turns, uneven weight, or rough weather.

To prevent accidents: “Stay low and centered… take corners at a safe speed…

and never tie the anchor line to the stern.”

If Someone Falls Overboard

“Immediately slow down and stop the boat,” throw a floatation device, and keep sight of the person.

Pull them in from the stern, and “turn off your engine” to avoid further danger.

Surviving in the Water

Stay calm, stick with your boat, and “get out of the water as quickly as possible.”

Lifejackets save lives by keeping you afloat and conserving energy.
