Teen Football Player, 15, Passes Away While
Teen Football Player Dies After Practice
Preston Malone, a 15-year-old sophomore at Lancaster Early College High School in Texas,
died after a medical emergency during football practice on August 18.
Sudden Collapse During Practice
“Preston told a coach he wasn’t feeling right,” said school spokesperson Kimberly Simpson.
“The coach immediately noticed that Malone was not sweating.”
Staff quickly placed him in a cold tub and called 911.
Despite initial hope, he passed away the next day.
Heat and Safety Measures
Practice was moved indoors due to 104°F heat.
The school said safety protocols were followed, including hydration stations and certified athletic trainers.
The indoor facility lacked air conditioning but had open garage doors and fans for airflow.
Remembering Preston
“His last words were, ‘Hey, I’m sorry I was unable to finish the workout,’”
said Superintendent Perera Simpson.
Coach Marcus Badger added, “He wasn’t the biggest kid, so he always had to fight.”
Another coach said, “It’s just hard… gone as a kid.”
