A Surprise Anniversary Road Trip

Anniversary Surprise
On our first anniversary, Clay brought me breakfast in bed — “cinnamon toast, bacon, and a surprise road trip.” I thought it was a sign he was ready to move forward.

Unspoken Distance
But as we drove through cornfields in silence, I felt something was off. “We drove with no clear destination,” and when I spoke of wildflowers, he brushed it off, focusing instead on places that seemed more about his past than our present.

The Truth Revealed
At a quiet waterfall, I found a tree carved with “Clay’s and Megan’s names.” He finally broke down: “This wasn’t supposed to be like this,” and admitted he wasn’t over her. I was just “filling the space she once held.”

The Turning Point
Crushed, I whispered, “I love you.” He didn’t answer — until I walked away. Then he called me back, barefoot and breathless: “I love you. You’re real.”
