Strong Quake Near Russia Shakes Hawaii, Tsunami Watch Lifted
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula rattled Hawaii on Saturday night, prompting a tsunami watch at 9:03 p.m. Just over 15 minutes earlier, tremors were felt across the state.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later confirmed, “There is no tsunami threat to the state of Hawai‘i based on all available data,” and canceled the alert. “Unless further information is received, this will be the last message sent out regarding this event.”
The quake was part of a series off Russia’s eastern coast, including magnitudes 7.0, 6.7, 7.4, and more. A video from Russia showed shaking homes and people screaming.
Though danger passed, locals urged caution. “The surge still exists,” one warned. Others expressed relief online: “Thank God Amen,” and “Cancelled, thank God.”
Officials reminded residents to avoid risky activities like diving or picking “opihi”—a coastal delicacy—during post-quake surges.
