“Always looking out for others”: Kansas mourns
A Life of Service Lost
Officer Hunter Simoncic, 26, was killed on August 26 while deploying stop sticks during a police chase.
Authorities say the suspect, Dennis Edward Mitchell III, intentionally struck him with a stolen vehicle.
“This was an intentional act of homicide on a police officer,” said KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman.

Heart for Others
Known for his humor and compassion, Simoncic raised money for Special Olympics and mentored students through Lead to Read KC.
“He was always thinking about other people,” said Steve Chastain, his fraternity advisor.
Community in Grief
Friends and family are heartbroken. “He loved his mom so much… they were inseparable,” Chastain added.
Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor him.

Lasting Legacy
A public funeral will be held September 3.
“His impact endures in the trust, joy, and sense of possibility he gave,” said Rhea LeGrande of Lead to Read KC.
