Deadly Gas Tanker Explosion in Mexico City

Mexico City is reeling after a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker overturned and exploded on the Iztapalapa–Chalco highway on September 10, 2025.

Witnesses described “a thunderous blast, a wave of heat, and a rising column of black smoke,” as vehicles were consumed and commuters fled.

Casualties and Damage

At least 15 people died and over 70 were injured, many with severe burns.

More than 30 vehicles were destroyed, and nearby homes and businesses suffered damage from the shockwave.

Investigation

Authorities are probing possible causes, including mechanical failure, driver error, and regulatory violations.

“If we find negligence or regulatory violations, those responsible will be held accountable,” a transportation official said.

Community and Safety Concerns

Residents demand stricter rules on hazardous cargo transport.

Experts stress vehicle inspections, better driver training, and safer routes.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for reforms to prevent another disaster in Mexico’s densely populated capital.
