Born Without A Nose, Here’s What Tessa Evans

A Rare Condition
Tessa Evans, born on Valentine’s Day 2013 in Maghera, Ireland, was one of fewer than 100 people worldwide with Bosma arhinia microphthalmia syndrome (BAMS), a condition where babies are born without a nose. Her father, Nathan, recalled, “It was funny the very first time she sneezed, but we actually found out that it actually comes from your chest.”

Early Struggles
Tessa spent five weeks in intensive care and had a tracheostomy at just two weeks old to help her eat and sleep. At age two, she became the first person to receive a cosmetic nasal implant. Her mother, Grainne, explained, “It was an incredibly difficult decision…we ultimately decided to go ahead as it was a chance to gradually change her appearance over the years.”

Life with Courage
Despite challenges, Tessa remains joyful. She once said, “My BAMs syndrome will not stop me from doing anything.”

Inspiration to Many
Her mother admires her strength: “Every day she inspires me with her zest for life and infallible courage.” Supporters online call her “beautiful” and “extraordinary.”
