Boyfriend of Ukrainian woman murdered
Ukrainian Refugee Fatally Stabbed in Charlotte
The fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, has sparked national outrage.
On August 22, while riding a train in Charlotte, she was killed in an unprovoked attack.
Her accused killer, Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, claimed “materials” in his body made him act violently.
Zarutska had texted her boyfriend she “would be home soon.”

Grief and Outrage
Her family said: “Iryna came here to find peace and safety, and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way.”
Her boyfriend, Stanislav Nikulytsia, shared his heartbreak online.
System Failure
Brown had 14 prior arrests but was released months earlier on cashless bail.
“North Carolina’s justice system failed Iryna Zarutska,” said House Speaker Tim Moore, calling Judge Teresa Stokes “unfit.”
Mental Health Warnings
Brown’s family described his violent behavior and mental illness.
“He said, ‘The government is trafficking y’all to get to me,’” his sister recalled.
