BREAKING NEWS?
NASA has identified a very large asteroid, officially named 52768 (1998 OR2), that will pass near Earth this June.
The object measures an estimated 1.5 to 4 kilometers wide and travels at 8.7 kilometers per second.
Although it will cross Earth’s orbital path, experts confirm there is no real risk of collision.
NASA says the asteroid will pass at a distance greater than the space between Earth and the Moon.
To compare, the Chelyabinsk asteroid that struck Siberia in 2013 and
injured nearly 1,500 people was only about 15–17 meters in size—much smaller than 1998 OR2.
Some studies note that an asteroid of this size could cause catastrophic damage if it ever hit Earth,
but current calculations show this scenario is extremely unlikely.
In short, 1998 OR2 is big and fast, but poses no danger during its upcoming approach.
