Deadly 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, China, and Thailand

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck early Monday at 3:42 a.m. local time, shaking Myanmar, southern China, and northern Thailand. The epicenter was located on the Myanmar-Yunnan border at a depth of 10 km, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake triggered mass evacuations, widespread panic, and extensive damage across the region.

Myanmar Hit Hardest

Myanmar reported at least 48 deaths, over 300 injuries, and dozens missing. The city of Lashio saw entire buildings collapse. “We heard a loud noise, and suddenly everything started shaking. The walls cracked, the ground moved like waves,” said local resident Myo Thant. A state of emergency has been declared in multiple areas, with rescue teams racing to find survivors.

Damage Across Borders

In China’s Yunnan province, officials confirmed 12 dead and over 100 injured. Infrastructure damage includes collapsed bridges, schools, and hospitals. Thousands have been evacuated, and emergency response teams are in action. In Thailand, no deaths were reported, but historic temples and buildings sustained serious damage. Schools in Chiang Rai are closed, and hospitals are on alert.

Relief and Warnings

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center briefly issued a coastal alert, later lifted. International aid groups, including the UN and Red Cross, are mobilizing food, medicine, and rescue support. Authorities warn of possible aftershocks and urge the public to rely on official sources.
