Genital Hygiene Tips
The genital area and surrounding skin are delicate and
can be easily irritated.
Here are simple ways to protect and care for your genital skin:
1. Wash gently
Use plain water or a gentle emollient to wash your genitals.
While water alone is fine, an emollient (such as aqueous cream,
Diprobase, or Doublebase)
adds extra protection and is inexpensive and easy to find in pharmacies,
supermarkets, or online.
You can apply the emollient like a cream before showering
or bathing to create a barrier from soaps and shampoos.
Rinse thoroughly afterward.
These products are safe for daily use,
and if you have dry genital skin,
applying some before bed can help.
2. Let the area breathe
Genitals often get little airflow—winter layers trap heat,
and summer weather causes sweating.
When you’re at home relaxing or while sleeping,
try going without underwear.
Loose-fitting pajama bottoms provide coverage while allowing healthy airflow.
3. Choose breathable underwear
Wear cotton underwear (or at least underwear with a cotton gusset).
Cotton allows your skin to breathe,
while synthetic fabrics trap heat and increase irritation.
Wash your underwear with non-biological detergent to reduce sensitivity.
