Tragic Takeoff
An Air India flight, AI171, crashed minutes after departing Ahmedabad Airport on June 12. It was bound for London Gatwick, but the aircraft reached only 625 feet before crashing four miles from the runway.
Casualties and Survivors
There were 242 people on board, including 169 Indian and 53 British nationals. Deputy Commissioner Kanan Desai confirmed, “265 dead have been found so far.” One passenger, 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is believed to be the sole survivor.
Pilot’s Final Words
Before impact, the captain reportedly radioed, “Mayday […] no thrust, losing power, unable to lift.”
Ongoing Investigation
The cause remains unknown. Air India Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran called it a “tragic accident” and said, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families… We are doing everything in our power to assist.”
