Do you need to wash eggs before using them?

1. Nature’s Built-In Protection

Every egg comes with a natural shield called the cuticle, or “bloom.”

This coating “seals microscopic pores in the shell,”

protecting the egg from bacteria such as Salmonella.

2. Why Washing Can Be Risky

When an egg is washed — especially “under running water” —

the protective layer can be stripped away, and the process may even “

push bacteria through the shell,” making the egg less safe.

3. Store-Bought vs. Farm-Fresh

In some countries, commercial eggs are already washed, sanitized, and refrigerated.

“Farm-fresh, unwashed eggs rely on their natural coating” and can be stored differently.

If an egg is dirty, gently spot-clean it right before cooking or discard it.

4. Safe Handling

Use clean hands, cook eggs thoroughly,

and remember that “leaving nature’s armor intact is the safest choice of all.”
