First man in the world to give birth – here he is,

Thomas Beatie: The World’s First Pregnant Man

Sixteen years ago, Thomas Beatie made history as the first legally recognized man to give birth. Assigned female at birth and originally named Tracy LaGondino, he began transitioning in his 20s and legally became male in 2002—though he kept his reproductive organs.

In 2006, Beatie paused hormone therapy to start a family with his then-wife, Nancy. Facing fertility struggles, he made the decision to carry the pregnancy himself. In 2008, he gave birth to their daughter, Susan, after 48 hours of labor.

Beatie became an international sensation. “It’s not a male or female desire to want to have a child; it’s a human desire,” he said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Despite his groundbreaking experience, he faced intense backlash: “Doctors have discriminated against us… receptionists have laughed at us… friends and family have been unsupportive.”

Over five years without testosterone, Beatie had four pregnancies, resulting in three children. He and Nancy eventually divorced, and in 2016, he married Amber, blending their families in Oregon. “It can get pretty loud with four kids… but we love it,” he told the Daily Mail.
