Flight attendant explains the unexpected reason

Why Flight Attendants Sit on Their Hands During Landing

Cebu Pacific flight attendant Henny Lim recently shared on TikTok why cabin crew sit on their hands during takeoff and landing. This practice is called the “bracing position.”

“This position involves fastening seatbelts securely, sitting upright, sitting on hands – arms up, thumbs tucked – and arms loose, and feet flat on the floor,” Lim said.

The purpose is to prevent injury in case of sudden impact. “This keeps body movement restricted so that there is less chance of injury if there was an impact,” she explained.

Lim added that flight attendants also perform a “silent review,” mentally preparing for emergencies by reviewing equipment, door operations, and visual cues outside the aircraft.

The FAA confirms this position helps reduce flailing and secondary impact. Lim and other crew members use social media to raise awareness about in-flight safety.
