Excavation of Mass Grave at Irish Orphanage Begins
A forensic team in Tuam, Ireland, is digging at a former “mother and baby” home, where up to 798 children died between 1925 and 1961. Historian Catherine Corless revealed many were dumped in “the pit,” a sewage tank. Only two were formally buried. “It’s been a long, long journey,” Corless said. Operated by Catholic nuns, the home symbolized Ireland’s harsh treatment of unmarried mothers. A 2021 inquiry exposed 9,000 child deaths in such homes. Taoiseach Michael Martin admitted Ireland had “a completely warped attitude,” while the nuns issued a “deep apology” for children “buried in a rude and unacceptable way.”
