GOP-Led J6 Investigation To Be Its Own

Republicans Launch New January 6 Committee

Georgia GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk announced plans for a new House committee to investigate the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. After posing with House Speaker Mike Johnson, Loudermilk said the committee will be formally established and could give Johnson more control over its work. He described the previous select committee as “so singularly focused that basically Trump created this entire problem,” but argued “there were numerous failures at various levels.” Loudermilk also admitted that including January 6 in the committee’s name “might give the wrong impression,” since there are “other security concerns besides January 6.”

GOP Pushes Investigations and Political Defense

With GOP control of Congress and the White House, Republicans aim to continue investigations from the last Congress, including efforts to shield Donald Trump from January 6 responsibility. Johnson promised the new panel would be “fully funded.” The party also plans to reissue subpoenas tied to investigations into Hunter Biden and classified documents linked to President Joe Biden, reviving legal battles with the Justice Department.

Subpoenas and Legal Battles

Republicans subpoenaed two Justice Department tax investigators involved in the Hunter Biden case. These subpoenas extend previous demands blocked by court, with one case now before DC District Judge Ana Reyes. Meanwhile, GOP efforts to scrutinize special counsel David Weiss’s Hunter Biden investigations and Jack Smith’s criminal cases against Trump are expected to continue.
