Deadly Night in Phillipsburg

On June 27, 2025, Deputy Brandon Gaede responded to reports of illegal fireworks in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

While attempting to arrest 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a struggle broke out.

Griffith pulled a hidden gun, shooting Gaede.

The 30-year-old deputy returned fire, killing Griffith, but later died at 10:24 p.m.

Gaede’s Law Enforcement Journey

A Colby High graduate, Gaede began his career as a jailer before joining the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office in 2017.

In 2024, he was promoted to undersheriff, a role that reflected his leadership and dedication.

Gaede leaves behind his wife and three young children.

Farmers State Bank opened a donation account for the family, and residents continue to share tributes.

“Brandon gave everything for his community,” one wrote.

Two months later, Phillipsburg still honors his sacrifice.

“Deputy Gaede died a hero,” a neighbor said.
