Japan On Edge: Scientists Warn 82% Chance

Japan Urges Action to Prepare for Megaquake

The Japanese government warns that urgent steps are needed to reduce the estimated death toll of up to 298,000 from a potential megaquake in the Nankai Trough. The likelihood of such a quake has risen to as high as 82%.

While a 2014 plan aimed to cut deaths by 80%, “actions made thus far will only reduce the toll by 20%,” according to Kyodo. The updated plan calls for faster construction of evacuation buildings, embankments, and frequent drills. “It is necessary…to come together and take measures in order to save as many lives as possible,” said Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

Social media fears have led to travel cancellations, partly fueled by a manga predicting a disaster on July 5, 2025. But experts insist, “It is impossible with current science to predict earthquakes,” said JMA head Ryoichi Nomura.
