Locals hanging Union Jacks across UK city say ‘we’re patriotic, not racist’
Birmingham Flag Displays Spark Debate
St George’s and Union flags have appeared across parts of Birmingham in what many call “a patriotic outpouring.” Supporters say they “brighten up the area and they’re not offensive in the slightest,” with locals donating to buy more.
Others, however, fear political motives. Resident Nazia Ahmed said, “For others, especially minorities like myself, it’s become harder to separate that pride from the undertone of nationalism.”
An organiser insisted, “This isn’t racism, it’s frustration at being pushed into a corner and silenced.” Supporters like Jeremy Duthie called the flags “a breath of fresh air,” while Hayley Owens argued, “We are sick of having to apologise for being British… The flags are not aimed at anyone in a negative way.”
Birmingham City Council plans to remove “unauthorised attachments” but worries removal could spark protests. Some residents point to Palestinian flags in East Birmingham as precedent for public displays.
