Love Me Tender secrets: What about Elvis
Elvis’s Film Debut
Love Me Tender (1956) was Elvis Presley’s first movie, mixing romance, drama, and Western action during the Civil War era. Fans were so excited that at the New York premiere, “1,500 fans camped out overnight,” and their screams often drowned out the dialogue.
From Music to Film
Originally called The Reno Brothers, the title was changed to Love Me Tender to promote Elvis’s hit song. He even “co-wrote some songs mainly to secure royalties,” combining music and acting as advised by his manager.
Elvis Takes It Seriously
Though only third-billed, Elvis took the role of Clint Reno seriously, memorizing lines and impressing the crew. Producers added songs and scenes to feature him more.
On Set and On Screen
Elvis had a crush on co-star Debra Paget, but she saw him as a friend. Despite bloopers like “zippers and a modern car,” the film showcased his early star power.
