Brazilian Parent and Child Transition Together as Father and Son
A parent and child from Brazil, formerly identifying as mother and daughter, have transitioned together and now live as father and son. Raphael, 38, and his 10-year-old son Gustavo were both assigned female at birth but now identify as male.
A Shared Journey
Raphael began his transition last year, while Gustavo started expressing his gender identity at age four. Their transition was made possible through Brazil’s public health care system. Raphael received treatment at Campo Limpo Municipal Hospital, and Gustavo was supported by specialists at São Paulo’s Institute of Psychiatry.
Support, Not Influence
Although their transitions happened around the same time, Raphael insists that his son’s decision was not influenced by him. “It didn’t have any influence, but he [Gustavo] gave me strength and courage to face [the transition],” Raphael said. Gustavo added, “It wasn’t difficult to call my mother dad.”
