Father and Son Transition Together
A Brazilian parent and child, once known as mother and daughter, have transitioned and now live as father and son. Raphael, 38, and his 10-year-old son Gustavo were both assigned female at birth but now identify as male. Their journey, shared with over 24,000 Instagram followers, was made possible by changes in Brazil’s public healthcare system.
Gustavo began transitioning at age 4, while Raphael started last year. “It didn’t have any influence, but he [Gustavo] gave me strength and courage to face [the transition],” Raphael shared.
The pair have faced challenges with people using their former names. “Even though it is our right to have the social name respected in practice, respect rarely happens in fact,” they posted.
They’ve also attended trans community events. “Being called by my name Raphael was so surreal I had never felt so happy like that day,” Raphael wrote.
