Off The RecordWoman Turns Boeing Plane Into Fully Functional Home

Unique Housing Ideas

Buses, small houses, and shipping containers are gaining popularity as

“one-of-a-kind dwellings” because they offer comfort at lower costs.

But Jo Ann Ussery was ahead of the trend.

She bought a decommissioned Boeing 727 and transformed it into a lavish mansion.

A Bold Start

After her home was destroyed in 1993, Ussery needed a new place for her family.

She said, “She fell in love at first sight, and the price

, including shipping, was only $2,000.” Inspired by her brother-in-law,

she turned the plane into her home, nicknaming it “Little Trump.”

Major Renovations

Ussery spent less than $30,000 upgrading the 138-foot plane.

She kept features like “only one airplane lavatory and the

overhead bins to store your belongings”

while adding insulation, new flooring, and air conditioning.

Comfortable Interior

The remodeled plane had three bedrooms, a living area, kitchen,

laundry, and even a cockpit-turned-master bathroom with a soaking tub

. Ussery did all the work herself and lived there from 1995 to 1999 before opening it as a museum.
