Emma Thompson Recalls Surprise Call from Donald Trump
At the 78th Locarno Film Festival, actress Emma Thompson revealed an unusual moment from the late ’90s — a phone call from Donald Trump. While filming Primary Colors and recently divorced from Kenneth Branagh, she was surprised when Trump called her trailer. “He said, ‘This is Donald Trump’… I thought it was a joke,” Thompson recalled. He invited her on a date, which she declined. Reflecting later, she quipped, accepting “might have changed the course of history.”
Thompson joked Trump might have been seeking a “nice divorcee” at the time. Though she turned him down, she admits it would’ve made “a great story.”
After her split from Branagh, which drew media attention due to his relationship with Helena Bonham Carter, Thompson found lasting love with actor Greg Wise. They married in 2003 and live a quiet family life. The Trump call remains a quirky footnote in her otherwise private personal journey.
