President Trump signs bill ending government
Trump Signs Bill Ending Record Shutdown
President Donald Trump signed a funding bill Wednesday night,
ending the 43-day government shutdown—the longest in U.S. history.
The closure had left federal workers unpaid, travelers stranded, and food banks overwhelmed.
Political Divide and Reactions
The House passed the bill 222–209 after the Senate approved it Monday.
Democrats refused to back a bill without an extension of health care tax credits.
Republicans opposed linking the issue to government funding.
“Government shutdowns don’t work,” said Rep. Tom Cole.
House Speaker Mike Johnson blamed Democrats for “causing pain” to win a policy fight.
What’s in the Bill
The deal, crafted by a bipartisan group of senators,
funds three annual spending bills and keeps the rest of the government running through January 30.
It also protects federal workers, restores pay, and provides $203.5 million for lawmaker security.
Health Care Battle Continues
Democrats vow to keep fighting for the tax credit extension.
“This fight is not over,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
