Sacred Temple Erupts In Flames After Tourist’s Costly Mistake

1. The Fire

A major fire broke out at Wenchang Pavilion on Fenghuang Mountain after

“a tourist committed a grave error while at the site.”

By 11 a.m., the three-story building was completely destroyed.

Officials confirmed no injuries and prevented the flames from spreading to nearby forest.

2. Cause and Damage

Footage showing “parts of the roof collapsing” revealed the scale of destruction.

Early findings indicate the blaze was likely caused by

“a visitor’s inappropriate usage of candles and incense.”

Authorities noted no historical relics were lost, as the pavilion built in 2009 contained none.

3. Historical Context

The site is linked to the ancient Yongning Temple,

built in 536 and once considered one of the “four hundred eighty glorious temples”

praised by poet Du Mu. Writer Shi Nai’an also lived and worked at Wenchang Pavilion.

4. Safety Measures

Officials plan to strengthen fire-prevention efforts,

recalling a similar 2023 blaze that destroyed part of the Shandan Great Buddha Temple.
