The Bold Women Behind The Bikini

1. A Tiny Outfit, a Huge Controversy

A single piece of clothing — the bikini — sparked global outrage,

bans, and even arrests. It was attacked by governments and called

“wicked” by religious leaders, yet women kept wearing it and reshaping fashion norms.

2. Modesty Before Style

Early 20th-century swimwear was heavy,

full-body wool designed for modesty, not fashion.

As noted, some beaches “even employed tailors to make last-minute

modifications to swimwear that was judged to be overly exposing.”

Rules were strict nationwide; in 1915, Coney Island banned socks showing “dimpled knees.”

3. Enforcing the Dress Code

Beach police used tape measures, ensuring no one broke the neck-to-knee requirement.

Any exposed skin was considered scandalous.

4. A Swimmer Who Defied the Rules

Change began when swimmer Annette Kellerman

wore a one-piece suit in 1907 that revealed her arms,

legs, and neck. Known as “the Australian Mermaid,”

she challenged expectations and helped redefine beachwear.
