The Incredible Story of a British Airways Pilot
Cockpit Windshield Failure
In 1990, British Airways pilot Tim Lancaster faced a terrifying moment when the cockpit windshield blew out at 17,000 feet during a flight to Málaga, Spain. Lancaster was “partially sucked out of the aircraft,” with only his legs inside.
Crew’s Heroic Response
Flight attendant Nigel Ogden bravely “grabbed Lancaster’s legs and held on for 20 minutes” despite frostbite and injury. Co-pilot Alastair Atchison kept the plane steady, while another attendant, Simon Rogers, helped Ogden.
Passengers’ Shock and Safe Landing
Passengers witnessed the ordeal as the crew worked to stop Lancaster’s full ejection. The plane landed safely at Southampton Airport.
