Death in Custody
Rachel Tunstill, 32, serving a life sentence for killing her newborn daughter, was found dead at HMP Styal in Cheshire. Her death is under investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
Brutal Crime
In 2017, Tunstill stabbed her newborn, Mia Kelly, with scissors shortly after giving birth. A judge called it a “brutal and senseless attack on a vulnerable newborn.”
Mental Health Concerns
Tunstill, a psychology graduate, was later diagnosed with autism and believed she was having a miscarriage. Her defense said her “mental health issues…contributed significantly to her actions.”
