Causes and Symptoms
Tongue fungal infections, mainly due to Candida overgrowth, often result from poor oral hygiene, antibiotics, or a weak immune system. These disrupt natural mouth flora, letting the fungus multiply.
Red, Glossy Tongue
A red, smooth, burning tongue is a key symptom. This may worsen with spicy or acidic foods. In some cases, it’s linked to iron-deficiency anemia: “leading to fatigue and other related symptoms.”
White or Yellow Coating
Another sign is oral thrush, a white or yellow coating on the tongue. It can come with bad breath, metallic taste, or discomfort: “sufferers frequently report bad breath or a persistent metallic taste in the mouth.”
Relief and Prevention
Home care includes brushing the tongue and rinsing with saltwater or baking soda. “Maintaining consistent oral hygiene” and limiting sugar can prevent recurrence. Those on antibiotics may benefit from probiotics, while immunocompromised individuals should seek medical advice.
