Tragedy as teen drowns rescuing four children
Heroic Act Turns Tragic
Sixteen-year-old Bryce Brooks of Atlanta died while saving four children caught in a rip current during a family vacation in Pensacola.
“He yelled out for help, not for himself but for the kids he was saving,” said his father, Shivy Brooks.
Family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II also died trying to save Bryce.
Community Honors
At Maynard Jackson High School, students held a balloon release.
Bryce’s mother, Crystal Brooks, said, “He made a decision to save lives. And he did.”
Remembering Bryce
Bryce was an honor roll student, music lover, fashion club member, and caring brother. The family had previously been featured on Netflix’s Instant Dream Home.
Lasting Legacy
The Bryce Brooks Foundation now offers free swim lessons and lifeguard scholarships.
“Get Your Teach On” raised over $78,000 in his honor.
The first six scholarships were recently awarded, including one to Uncle Chuck’s son.
