Trump Fires Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden
President Donald Trump has dismissed Carla Hayden,
the first woman and African American Librarian of Congress, via an email from deputy personnel director
Trent Morse: “Your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately.”
Hayden, appointed in 2016, had said,
“Being a person of color… it means so much that here is a person of color leading the world’s largest library.”
Democrats criticized the move. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries called it “a disgrace… the latest in [Trump’s] ongoing effort to ban books and whitewash American history.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer called for appointments to be made by Congress, not “presidents that treat federal appointments like reality TV prizes.”
FEMA Chief Also Ousted
Trump also fired acting FEMA head Cameron Hamilton after he opposed plans to eliminate the agency.
“I do not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to eliminate FEMA,” he said before his dismissal.
