Trump Tells Schumer To ‘GO TO HELL’
Breakdown of Talks on Trump’s Nominees
Intense negotiations over President Trump’s nominees ended abruptly Saturday night, with lawmakers heading home. Trump blamed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, accusing him of “demanding over One Billion Dollars to approve a small number of our highly qualified nominees.”
He called the demand “egregious and unprecedented” and “political extortion,” telling Schumer to “GO TO HELL!” Instead of voting on up to 60 nominees, senators only approved seven before recess.
Democrats See Victory, Republicans Blame Schumer
Schumer claimed Trump’s withdrawal was a defeat for Republicans, saying Trump “threw in the towel” and was “unable to do the basic work of negotiating.” Senate Democrats insisted their offer never changed, while Republicans accused Schumer of constantly raising demands. Sen. Markwayne Mullin said Schumer “went too far” and that the White House was involved all along.
Negotiation Details and Demands
Both sides believed they were close to a deal. Democrats wanted billions unfrozen for the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid, plus a guarantee against future clawbacks, in exchange for approving some nominees. Republicans wanted more nominees confirmed but faced increasing demands, leading to stalled talks.
