Rare, Fatal Workplace Injury
An 18-year-old worker in India died after a heavy metal object struck the front of his head, causing a catastrophic cervical spine injury.
Published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Case Reports (Sept. 2022), doctors described it as the first documented case of its kind.
The Incident
The impact left him unconscious and in shock.
He was intubated, stabilized with a rigid collar, and rushed to hospital.

Medical Findings
CT scans showed “an isolated retropulsion of the C5 vertebral body into the spinal canal” with a secondary C6 fracture.
Unlike typical patterns, there was no facet joint displacement or pedicle fracture.

This rare “nutcracker-like” compression defied existing classification systems.

Outcome and Lessons
Despite cervical traction and ventilatory support, the patient died within two days.
The case highlights urgent workplace safety needs—helmets, overhead load precautions—
and calls for broader injury classifications to capture atypical spinal trauma.
