A Practical Guide to Freezing Bread

With two growing boys, bread disappears quickly, so freezing it helps “save money,

reduce food waste, and ensure we always have something ready.”

But freezing it incorrectly can leave slices “dry, stiff,

or covered in freezer frost,” or stuck together in a solid block.

The key is preventing air exposure and uneven freezing.

The method begins when the bread is still fresh. If needed, slice it evenly,

then place slices in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Freeze uncovered for one to two hours so the slices firm up and don’t fuse together.

Once firm, transfer the slices to a resealable freezer bag and

“press out as much air as possible” to prevent freezer burn.

For extra protection, double-bag or wrap the bag in foil and store it flat.

When needed, remove only what you want.

Bread can thaw in minutes or go straight into the toaster,

keeping the texture soft and flavor intact.
