The Burden of Sin and God’s Love
Jesus was made to bear our sins, with the Father placing the burden of our transgressions on His Son. As Pope Benedict XVI said, this is a “turning of God against himself” (Deus Caritas Est, 12). God’s love extends even to His adversaries, as shown in Matthew 5:43-48. The dialogue God seeks with us through the paschal mystery is deeper than idle conversation, which is a distraction from true connection.
Empathy and the Paschal Mystery
Placing the paschal mystery at the center of our lives calls us to empathize with Christ’s suffering. This includes addressing issues like violence, inequality, environmental destruction, and the greed-driven idolatry of profit. The need to share our resources through almsgiving remains critical.
Charity and Economic Change
Almsgiving and political engagement are essential to creating a more just world. In Lent, I will meet with young economists and innovators in Assisi to discuss a fairer economy.
Call to Transformation
May our hearts be softened during Lent, as we respond to God’s invitation for reconciliation, becoming “the salt of the earth and the light of the world” (Mt 5:13-14).
