A Diver Saves a Humpback Whale, but What the Whale
A Sign of Distress
Near the Farallon Islands, conservation volunteer James Moskito
noticed a humpback whale lingering unnaturally at the surface.

Entering the Water
Trusting experience, James entered the frigid ocean and
approached calmly. He moved slowly, aware of the risk posed
by an animal weighing tens of tons, choosing reassurance over force.
The Rescue
The whale’s tail was tangled in a nearly 3,000-pound anchor
and close to a mile of heavy chain. James and his team worked
for hours in cold, shifting waters, carefully cutting the metal
while the whale remained remarkably still.
A Quiet Release
Once freed, the whale circled James before swimming away.

and the impact of human debris on marine life.
