High Alert at Chicago O’Hare Airport
Airport Alert
Chicago O’Hare International Airport was placed on high
alert after officials confirmed a measles exposure involving
an adult traveler in Terminal 1 on April 22–23. The individual,
who had received only one MMR dose, moved through crowded areas during peak travel.
High Risk of Spread
Health officials warned that measles is “among the most
contagious viruses known,” able to linger in the air
for “up to two hours.” Enclosed airport spaces increased the risk of exposure for thousands.
Health Response
Authorities noted that measles can spread “before symptoms appear,”
which include fever, cough, and red eyes, followed by a rash
The traveler was isolated after symptoms developed, and a
second local case triggered expanded contact tracing.
Public Warning
Travelers were urged to monitor symptoms. Officials stressed
that completing the “two-dose MMR series remains critical” to preventing outbreaks.
